When I heard Tash Sultana’s song “Jungle,” I immediately became a fan. Tash Sultana has been one of my top favorite musicians ever since I discovered their one song.

However, can an artist be one of your favorites if you don’t listen to the rest of their work?* Before, I would have said no, but in this case, I’m starting to change my mind.

Tash is an Australian musician whose career began in the streets of Melbourne, Australia. Having played the guitar since they were three, now 27, throughout the years they developed musical engineering skills beyond belief. This artist has a talent that is beyond impressive, so much so that they’ve earned the accolade of being one of the hardest working music exports in Australia.

One of the reasons why I am writing this post is because not only is this artist so unique and exceptional with a work method I admire, but their most popular song moved me so deeply, that I was moved enough to write about it and share.

“Jungle” by Tash Sultana has amassed 150 million views(and counting) on YouTube since they published their live performance on May 4th, 2016.

Tash's most famous and well-known song, "Jungle," was performed (by themselves) in one of their bedrooms at home. Every instrument, sound, and line of the song was created and performed by them alone; proof of their excellent engineering as a musician. They used instruments/machines I have never seen before but that I now carry an interest in learning, as a newbie musician myself. Not only was their use of instruments exceptional, but their voice alone was something ethereal. This performance is just so amazing. Hard to describe. Moving? Spiritual, even? The way that every part of themselves was so deeply involved in the performance only emphasized the feeling of the song. Their face, body and voice - everything was a 100% into the song. These factors all together captivated their audience. Tash Sultana has become one of my top favorite artists off of one performance alone.

Tash is one of those artists that can move a crowd, who’s performance is worth the ticket. Their presence and performance is strong enough to move a crowd alone, and has been enough to send them on a tour to various countries across the globe (selling over half a million tickets). What I love most about an artist is when they reach such high levels of greatness starting from the most humble beginnings - and this was Tash.

Have I tried listening to Tash's other songs? Yeah, but I didn't vibe with them in the same way that I did with their live performance (specifically) of "Jungle." I have rarely been so moved by a song or performance like this before, so I'm going to say that Tash is one of my favorites, even so.

Some overall interesting facts about Tash include:

They are Australian

An LGBTQ musician

Gender-fluid

Played the guitar since the age of 3

Dubbed one of the hardest working music exports in Australia

Broke records selling out arenas around the globe.

Known as being a one woman-band.

Their vocal range stretches five octaves

(facts gathered from their website).

*This is in reference to whenever you meet someone who is a band's super fan and when you mention liking the band to them and stating you're a fan, they'll respond with "Oh yeah? Name ten of their songs." If it comes to Led Zeppelin, they'll make sure you don't state Stairway to Heaven (usually a song's most popular song with the general public). But in this case, it doesn't really matter. It's not that serious.
